Hine-nui-te-pō | START Art T-Shirt

The Atua

Hine-nui-te-pō is a significant figure in Māori tradition, associated with death and the world of spirits. Originally known as Hine-tītama, the Dawn Maiden, she became Hine-nui-te-pō, the Great Woman of Night, after discovering the identity of her father, Tāne.

In many traditions, she is understood as the guardian who receives the spirits of the departed. Her story speaks of transformation, the passage between life and death, and the place of death within the natural order.
