The Atua

Rongomātāne is the atua associated with cultivated food, agriculture and peace in Māori tradition.

A son of Ranginui, the Sky Father, and Papatūānuku, the Earth Mother, Rongomātāne is particularly connected with kūmara and the cultivation of crops that sustain communities.

In traditional accounts, following the separation of Ranginui and Papatūānuku, Rongomātāne sought refuge within the earth alongside his brother Haumiatiketike. Their connection to Papatūānuku reflects the importance of the land as a source of nourishment and life.

Rongomātāne is also associated with peace, providing a contrast to his brother Tūmatauenga, the atua of war. His stories reflect the importance of cultivation, sustenance and harmony.
