Rūaumoko | START Art T-Shirt

The Atua

Rūaumoko is the atua associated with earthquakes, volcanoes and the movement of the earth in Māori tradition.

The youngest child of Ranginui, the Sky Father, and Papatūānuku, the Earth Mother, Rūaumoko remained within his mother's embrace when his parents were separated.

In many traditions, his movements beneath the earth are said to cause earthquakes and volcanic activity. His story reflects the immense forces that shape the land and the enduring connection between Papatūānuku and her children.
