The Atua

Tangaroa is the atua of the ocean, seas and marine life in Māori tradition.

A son of Ranginui, the Sky Father, and Papatūānuku, the Earth Mother, Tangaroa is closely connected with the vast waters that surround Aotearoa and the creatures that inhabit them.

Following the separation of Ranginui and Papatūānuku, Tangaroa became caught in the conflict between his brothers. When Tāwhirimātea unleashed fierce storms upon the world, Tangaroa's waters were thrown into turmoil.

In many traditional accounts, Tangaroa is the ancestor of fish and other marine creatures. His relationship with Tāne Mahuta also reflects the connections and tensions between the ocean and the land.

Tangaroa's stories remind us of the power of the sea, the abundance it provides and the importance of respecting the natural world.
