Tāne Mahuta | START Art T-Shirt

The Atua

Tāne Mahuta is the atua of forests, trees and birds in Māori tradition, and one of the children of Ranginui, the Sky Father, and Papatūānuku, the Earth Mother.

In the traditional accounts of creation, Tāne separated his parents, pushing Ranginui upwards and allowing light to enter the world. This created the space in which life could flourish.

Tāne is also associated with the creation of the first woman, Hineahuone, whom he formed from the earth.

His stories reflect the relationship between humanity and the natural world, the importance of forests and the life they sustain.
