The Atua

Tāwhirimātea is the atua of winds, storms and weather in Māori tradition.

A son of Ranginui, the Sky Father, and Papatūānuku, the Earth Mother, Tāwhirimātea opposed his brothers' decision to separate their parents.

While his brothers welcomed the light and space created by their separation, Tāwhirimātea remained loyal to Ranginui. In his anger and sorrow, he unleashed powerful winds and storms upon his brothers, challenging their authority over the natural world.

His battles with Tāne Mahuta, Tangaroa and other brothers help explain the forces of nature, from fierce storms that shake the forests to winds that disturb the oceans.

Tāwhirimātea's stories reflect the power of the elements, the bonds of whānau and the enduring forces that shape our world.
