The Atua

Tūmatauenga is the atua associated with war, conflict, courage and human endeavour in Māori tradition.

A son of Ranginui, the Sky Father, and Papatūānuku, the Earth Mother, Tūmatauenga played a significant role in the events surrounding the separation of his parents.

When Tāwhirimātea unleashed storms against his brothers, Tūmatauenga stood firm. In many traditional accounts, he is the only brother who successfully resisted Tāwhirimātea's attacks.

Tūmatauenga is also closely associated with humanity, reflecting the determination, resourcefulness and resilience required to face life's challenges.
